Favorite Desserts

New Yorkers love their desserts and it shows in the sheer number of places that sell pies, cakes, chocolates, ice cream, donuts, and cookies. Are you getting hungry yet?

New York City’s tourism web site lists the number of restaurants at 18,696, add in bakeries, donut, and ice cream shops and the total reaches over 21,500 Dessert locations. Larger than the population of Darien, Connecticut, which is 20,000.

Walking Tours Manhattan (www.walkingtoursmanhattan.com) has added top-rated original, New York owned desserts stops to its visits of icon and landmark destinations in all neighborhoods. Bruce Scher, founder of the company says, “New Yorkers and visitors’ alike love seeing the city’s best attractions while sampling local gourmet sweets. We include 3-5 Dessert stops on each tour.”

Joyce Walsh, an Upper East Side resident was enjoying the excellent spring weather recently touring the best sweet shops in Greenwich Village. “I grew up on New York Cheese Cake and this is the best. I’m reliving great memories from childhood right here at Rocco’s. The style of this old-world Italian bakery will live with me forever.”

Larry Davidson visiting from Buffalo, New York was in town for the International Auto Show, and found the dessert walking tour in Harlem on a Google search. “I'm from Georgia, and have tasted red velvet cakes all across the south, and Make My Cake is the real deal, you bet I’ll be back on my next trip.” I've notice New York City not only has the quantity of places offering all kind of desserts, and the quality is unbelievable. It can’t be matched anywhere."

We asked Bruce Scher, who’s title is Tour Guide to the Desserts, a two-part question, what’s his favorite dessert and where do we get it? He face broadened into a bigger smile, and said, “I love ice cream; my favorite place is the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. A family-run business for over 30 years, its freshly-made Asian flavors are sold in only location.  Double scoop of almond cookie on a cone is my favorite.”
